Today I ordered my doctoral robes.

This might actually happen.

Ooo, you're gonna walk the walk! I didn't go to my graduation, but I feel sure that I'll walk for any advanced degree I get. It is pretty impressive, after all.

After this much effort, sweat, swearing and time, HELL YES I'm gonna walk the walk. I'm gonna milk this damned thing for every bit of pomp and circumstance it's worth. :D

That and there's a good chance I'll end up shooting for academia, so they'll be needed for those formal occasions.

I wonder what one wears under a kilt under a robe??

Socks and shoes :).

I'm Heeeellllping.

So, will this be a grad-school-only ceremony, or will the undergraduates be involved as well? Be warned, if the latter, the three hours of Pomp and Circumstance will horribly scar you. Trust me on this.

Oh no, UNC ditched any sort of even token nod at the PhD candidates during the big ceremony three years ago. They used to have the PhDs file through, and the name and title were announced, you got your 'diploma', and then offstage you went. Dept by dept. They decided this was just an annoyance to everyone else and ditched it.

So the Graduate School now has their own *very* formal ceremony, and each dept has a small informal one as well.

Ah. When I got my BA many years ago, the PhD candidates went first, and got their names mentioned, then the MA candidates, and their names, then 2 hours of nameless black-robed undergrads :).
Frankly, I'd rather your school's set up :).

Congratulations, again.

Ah yes, one must have one's fancy hoodie for wearing in future lengthy graduation ceremonies during which one's not actually doing the graduating. It's a cult, man, RESIST!

And of course you shouldn't have anything on under the kilt, the robe should block any uncomfortable drafts. Do you have the snazzy socks as well?
