Yeah, this is just speculation, and kind of embarrassing speculation at that, but I really want to put this down (and should have a week ago when I picked up issue #2), just to get a timestamp on it. :)

Geoff Johns is penning DC's _Green Lantern: Rebirth_ miniseries, and he's promised a major twist that I think I've puzzled out:

Parallax is the name of the impurity in the recreated central battery on Oa. The impurity is an embodiment (sentient?) of fear. The Guardians are paranoid little buggers - why else be so obsessed with imposing order if you aren't terrified of chaos? (As evidenced by them coalescing the early chaos magic of the Universe into the Starheart.)

No Lantern before Rayner knew fear, as a condition of their becoming a GL - and Morpheus (Morrison's JLA run) stated that Kyle would become the greatest Lantern *because* he knew fear. He knows how to deal with it - no other Lantern could possibly know how.

Jordan went insane as Parallax out of fear that he couldn't save everyone. Stewart and Gardner go insane during issue #2, and during Gardner's sudden and mysterious re-activation, J'onn mentions that he senses fear in Gardner. It would make sense that Jordan, being the utterly fearless one, would have the least capability on how to stave off fear - no experience, no defenses. He was the most vulnerable.

Kyle is injured after crashing a *solid* ship en route from Oa, and refuses to use his ring to heal himself. He realizes if he does, he opens himself to Parallax. He also says "Parallax is coming. It is coming." It. Not he, it. And lo and behold, what does he have in his ship at the end? Jordan's body, dressed as Parallax. Odd language if he was transporting Parallax's body, no?

I think Johns is at one shot revamping 50 years of GL history (including Alan Scott!) in a *BEAUTIFUL* way... if this is truly what he's doing, I'm in awe. (And I want credit for figuring it out ahead of time, dammit.)

I'm guessing Rayner will be the one that finally opens himself up to Parallax, and deals with it in a nice big willpower showdown. Jordan/Spectre/Parallax will finally shatter into individual entities, exposing Parallax for the singular consciousness it is, Jordan will reinhabit his old body, and the Spectre will be bonded to a new soul. (Rayner? Sure not going to be Ray Palmer...)

Jordan becomes GL again to join the rest of the resurrected Silver Age cast (with the exception of St. Allen), Rayner's gentler soul becomes bonded to the Spirit of Redemption, and the GL Corp is rebooted. Again.

God I'm a geek.
