New Star Trek pic out...

Of the new Enterprise (Behind link for those wishing to remain spoiler-free.)

Whatcha think?

Wow, that's overwrought and ugly. Like someone had their own wacky ideas but was constrained to the original design, and wasn't happy about it.

[identity profile] icebluenothing.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen that a couple of times, now, but not from a reliable source, yet. Where'd you find it? Are we sure yet that that's not just a fan render?

As far as what I think of it .... I don't .... *hate* it, I guess. Well, I kinda do. Mainly, it looks to me like the "neck" is slid waaay too far back on the secondary hull, making the whole thing look kind of ungainly.

*shrug* I don't know. I'd have to see it in motion. I'm trying to keep in mind that when I first saw pictures of 1701-D, that looked "wrong" to me, too.

[identity profile] franktheavenger.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The D looked wrong because it's a flying piece of poo. :p

[identity profile] icebluenothing.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I *used* to think that? Then they came out with Voyager, and I retroactively decided that the Big D didn't look so bad after all. :)

(Don't even get me started on the 1701-E, though. Or as I like to call it, the 1701-XTREEEEM!!)

[identity profile] franktheavenger.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You raise fine points, sir. Of course in whatever crap the E premiered I found myself wondering when they were going to stop making them, since they only lasted a year or so before whatever idiot captain they gave it to managed to destroy the damn thing.

[identity profile] kickaha.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
You'd think after a couple of 'oopsies', they'd bench the morons with a desk job. I mean what the hell? How bad off does Starfleet have to be in the recruiting department to be stuck with captains who keep losing their ships?

I mean, I thought the captain was supposed to go down *with* the ship - kind of a self-fixing problem, ifyouknowwhatimean.

[identity profile] icebluenothing.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
the "neck" is slid waaay too far back on the secondary hull

.... Yeah, I think that *is* the main problem I have with this design. Take a look at this quick-and-dirty "fixed version" I just Photoshopped and tell me if you don't agree.

[identity profile] kickaha.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ayup, that's my beef too. I can handle the bulbous nacelles, really, but sticking the chin out like that just looks wrong.

[identity profile] kickaha.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. Turns out the dish wasn't extended so much, nor was the neck moved back, when compared to the TOS version.

The butt was truncated.

TMP dish, TMP neck (mostly), TOS neck placement, TOS nacelle placement, ENT nacelles?

Looks more like they just shoved the whole secondary hull forward a lot. Bah, I'm still going to see it, and you can expect much vitriolic ranting to come out of it.

[identity profile] kickaha.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
We would expect nothing less. :D

[identity profile] icebluenothing.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Frankly (sorry, you've apparently tapped into a deep vein of Six-can't-shut-up), I don't think they should have changed the design at all. I've seen computer renderings in recent years that have taken the original design, and given it more depth and detail, and they looked great. They should have just done that.

[identity profile] kickaha.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Seen the bridge?

Between that and the outer hull changes, it should be the iNterprise. :P

[identity profile] icebluenothing.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I *like* the bridge -- as something to look at, at least, if not as a place where I could plausibly imagine people working all day long. Not without sunglasses.

[identity profile] kickaha.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. The future's so bright...

I certainly don't *mind* the bridge. It's a very different aesthetic than TOS, obviously, but actually feels like it would fit somewhere between ENT and TMP. Kind of. Okay, ENT and TNG.

"This year, we're going *white*!"

One of the biggest problems with TOS as canon is that it's so... old. I don't mean for 22xx, I mean for *now*. Communicator? *holds up iPhone* Data cards? *holds up MiniSD* Their predictions of future technology, barring phasers, teleporters, and warp drives, were kinda, um... short-sighted. But then, that's not really new. Truly futuristic technology is a) difficult to render on-screen in any way that the audience can relate to, and b) just ends up looking like the director waves their magic wand. (Same issue with alien species, IMO. Truly alien aliens are, well... hard. Easier to make Standard Biped #47, with Weird Cultural Quirk #3 and Personality Template #82.)
