Ever wonder why the UNIT era seemed endless and timeless all at the same time?

The TARDIS clock hit the end of the epoch and wrapped.

"DAMMIT! Back to 1970 AGAIN!"

I love that Vernor Vinge had the Qeng Ho group still using time_t millennia from now, thinking zero was approximately the first moon landing. It'll probably happen, too.

LOL Yeah... it's funny how we create fanciful notions for the beginning of our calendars, assuming that something momentous must have occurred, instead of it being an accident of math and culture.

That, and it's a wonderful commentary on never underestimating the lifetime of legacy code. ;)

...this being the little-known backstory origin of the 1972 hit Stuck In The Middle With You.

Wow. Just ... wow.

(Of course, I love that the show has finally directly acknowledged the UNIT dating problem by having the Doctor be uncertain about whether he worked with them in the 70's or 80's .... )

Oh, excuse me -- here's a better link I figured it had to have a page of its own ....

Yeah, Ahistory had a good rundown of the issues and problems as well. (Which I almost followed after reading the entire book three times in succession...)

Oh, man, I really want a copy of that .... I've held it in my hands twice now, and didn't have the money to pick it up either time.

LOL I can't tell if that's a good wow, or a "Jesus H. Christ, I can't believe you came up with that dreck" wow. :D

... Both? No, actually, not so much "wow, I can't believe you came up with it" as "wow, that joke is aimed at a really small subset of the population."
