The CS Dept was told one thing, he showed up, and suddenly they never saw him. (When he was hired, he was paid more than the Chancellor or University System President.) If you go back and read the PR pieces when he was hired, it was all about the teaching.
From what I saw, he quickly polarized people into two camps: those who felt utterly played, and those who grabbed his coattails. Unless he's taking others to MS, I'm betting the second set is nearly empty by this point.
Ah well. We'll see if RENCI keeps going, or ever becomes relevant.
And RENCI, as an internal organization, screwed around with other parts of UNC as well - didn't play well in the sandbox, basically, but was untouchable because this guy was anointed royalty.
I, for one, was boned by this guy. I really wonder what gets into people's heads and convinces them to buy snake oil like that!
