So he's leaving his old job?
Woot! ;)

And why would joining The Evil Corp be a bonus worth striving for?

Like attracts like?

Don't remember him, sorry. Should I?

[identity profile] kickaha.livejournal.com 2007-11-13 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
He was after your time - came to UNC in a big flurry of accolades and *cough* funding, this big academic and teacher who was going to inject a fresh face in the CS dept. He never taught a class that I heard of, and within, jeez, days maybe, it was obvious he had other plans completely. His complete absence was a running (bitter) joke in the dept, and during the June 2006 graduation ceremony, students did a huge "Where's Dan?" skit that even the senior faculty were howling at. http://www.whereisdanreed.com

http://www.renci.org/

The CS Dept was told one thing, he showed up, and suddenly they never saw him. (When he was hired, he was paid more than the Chancellor or University System President.) If you go back and read the PR pieces when he was hired, it was all about the teaching.

From what I saw, he quickly polarized people into two camps: those who felt utterly played, and those who grabbed his coattails. Unless he's taking others to MS, I'm betting the second set is nearly empty by this point.

Ah well. We'll see if RENCI keeps going, or ever becomes relevant.

And RENCI, as an internal organization, screwed around with other parts of UNC as well - didn't play well in the sandbox, basically, but was untouchable because this guy was anointed royalty.

I, for one, was boned by this guy. I really wonder what gets into people's heads and convinces them to buy snake oil like that!

But at least this is damned good tv! (munching popcorn)

I imagined that something in that realm might have happened to you and nearly definitely to other people in your realm. Rhar.

I thought of you during the whole cs graduation "special award" presentation and wished you could have been there to laugh.

Heeeeeee!

Yeah, i heard. Oy. Just, Oy.

UNC got taken to the cleaners.

Being a tool has *always* paid. It pays particularly well in IT.

Sometimes, I wish I could bring myself to play the political game, but (my shaggy dog stories aside) I seem constitutionally incapable of telling people what they want to hear if reality differs.

D00d! The comments on the DiTcH article are telling.

I thought I had tons of generalized bile over the issue...

Makes me wish I was a bigger tool. :)
