Usually my mother biffs on my birthday (and Xmas) pretty badly. I've gotten presents that I have, quite literally, thought went to the wrong person. (I learned pretty quickly that asking "Are you sure this was for me?" is a bad approach though...) She goes for volume, not quality. The more expensive the better, and if it matches *her* tastes, it *must* be perfect, right??

She did good this year.

I got maple bars overnighted from Seattle. :D

I'm sure most of you have no clue what I'm talking about, but it's a raised bar donut with maple glaze. I *LOVE* these things, and I have never found them outside of the NW. I was *hoping*, what with moving north towards the land where maple sap flows, I'd run into them again, but nope. Totally a NW thing, apparently.

And I have 4. :D Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go get my sugar rush on.

16:13 update: guhhhhhh.... sugar crasssshhhhhhh.... *thud*

You know, reading that quote list, I'm thinking I need to see that film.

Not finding my original review in quick search, but I stand by my recent remarks in January with the caveat I've softened my overall attitude about the film.

Awwww now that was sweet of her. As someone with a mom that is also a horrible present giver, I can appreciate the significance when they finally get it at least a little right. Enjoy your seattle goodness.

Dude, *no maple bars*? WT fricking F?

Sluys' Bakery on Front Street in Poulsbo does "maple men"--nine-inch-tall (and near two-inch-thick) gingerbread-man shaped donuts slathered with maple frosting and dotted with chocolate for eyes, mouth, and buttons. It's diabetes-in-a-bag, but what a way to die...

Hey, new keyboard! Turns out drool is bad for the electronics...

Yeah - doing a search for "maple bar ny" got me to the boards on chowhound.com, which has a number of quotes along the lines of...

"A friend of mine is in search of maple bars. I guess they're some kind of donut. Any ideas for where to get great ones?"

'some kind of donut'. HA!

"You can get anything in NYC!" HA!^2

That's just whacked. I don't even really like maple bars, but it would be very weird not to have them.

Next time you're around here, we'll bring you a maple man. :)

You're on! :D

Yeah, sweet tea is to the South as maple bars are to the NW: you just sort of *expect* them, everywhere.

"Totally a NW thing, apparently."

You're kidding. I mean, I know you're not, but man! I assumed the same thing you did, that if one goes to Maple Syrup Central, one will find maple bars!

Congrats on getting your junk food fix :). Oh, and Happy birthday, since I forgot that part yesterday :).

Yeah, apparently the closest thing up here is a "maple coated Long John"... which just sounds wrong, wrong, wrong, if you ask me.

A Long John is the generic name for the bar donut, and you can find them up here, sometimes, but almost always in either chocolate or vanilla. Never maple.

Are you sure it's not a West Coast thing?

I missed maple bars like mad when I was in NC.

Yup, in fact it seems to be limited almost exclusively to OR and WA, with some in northern CA.

If you're ever in Portland? You have to go here. And have a bacon maple bar.

Saw that. I may have to get some bacon and try it with the last bar here... :D
