Two days later, after hand-inspecting, tracing out, and replicating the logic of a few dozen files encoding formalisms in XML and a variant of Prolog, I have my answer.
This time I'm writing it down. Sheesh.
(Gawd that was nasty. And that was an implementation detail I didn't consider important enough to write down? Good lord, I'm going to have to reread my dissertation just to find out what I *did*...)
