Well that was unusual...

Came home, walked up to the second floor landing, and smelled hot wood. They're renovating one of the second floor apartments, so I thought maybe someone got a bit frisky with a belt sander and scorched some planking. Eh, it happens.
Then I opened the door to our place - scent of smoke. Strong. Definitely woodsy...ish. Run upstairs... and it's gone. It's not upstairs, it's pooled in the *bottom* of the stairwell. Oooookay...
Go get landlord, ask if they redid floors or anything today. "Nope, why?" "Uh, I smell hot wood and smoke." "WHAT?" We go back upstairs, he says "Yeah, that's smoke... but... ohhhhhh..."
He had a chimney guy come today. One of the chimneys runs behind the wall down at our entryway. The chimney guy probably used a lit newspaper or magazine to check airflow, and there are cracks in the chimney, seeping into the wall, which isn't exactly air tight in this place.
Thankfully, that chimney is used for the natural gas boiler for the radiators, so that's why we never smell smoke - it's also why we *do* smell, every so often, a strange odor down there in the wintertime.
Windows are open - luckily it's a nice night tonight. Place is slowly airing out.
