And sweet tea too! :D

[livejournal.com profile] ginkgo found a smoked meats and BBQ joint in Croton-on-Hudson, just up the river a bit that actually wasn't that bad. A little too clean, the apparent owner (who looked like Dad Brady after a bender) kept... *HOVERING* over everything, and trying to 'explain' BBQ to the patrons (which was damned amusing when he came to our table), and generally being a nervous nellie, but the food made up for it.

The tea could have been sweeter, the hot vinegar (Piedmont Carolina Cue sauce) could have been hotter, and they had Tabasco instead of Texas Pete, but WE HAD 'CUE! :D And hush puppies, and cornbread, and slaw, and 'nana pudding. :)

We're definitely going back.

The meat was incredibly well cooked and smoked, although it needed a bit more fat and grease cut into it. (Although I understand why they didn't.) The hushpuppy mix was really good, even if they probably should have dropped the temp of the fryer by 15-20deg.

But y'know, when everything is 90% there on something you didn't think you'd find in the new area... you embrace it thankfully.

WE HAD 'CUE! :D *happy dance*

Yeah, on the menu it was 'Nana Pudding, which I found to be a bit... unauthentic, but it wasn't bad. Could have sat for another 24hrs to get the liquid into the Nilla wafers, but it was a good attempt, and one of the better ones I've had in a restaurant even *in* NC.

So happy you found some q. When I was working in Jersey I stumbled across a "NC" style q joint and it certainly wasn't as good as yours sounded. We'd like to see y'all next time your down this way...

That would be fabulous - this last trip was much less free-form social than we would have liked, what with familial events, graduation, a wedding, and me having to work all week. :/

And yeah, I was more than mildly surprised by this place. I still prefer Allen & Sons by a long shot, but this was honestly better in some ways than some 'cue I've had *IN* NC. Mind boggling.
