In our theatre, there was audible sobbing from a fleet of teenaged Browncoat girls about five rows behind us right after they killed Wash. And it continued through pretty much the rest of the flick.
I'd actually been spoiled about Wash's death, because I chose to read an interview with Alan Tudyk that warned of spoilers (I've never minded much. I knew how LotR went, I know the Chronicles of Narnia and will still see that movie, so...) Anyway, Alan said that he had always figured Wash for a 2 season character at most, and he was really pleased with the way they killed him off.
It's not "Buffy", but people in the Jossverse have a hard time staying dead. Or at least out of the story even if they are dead.
