Forehead slap!
Today I figured out how to make espresso in half the time: pre-boil the water.
My espresso machine is such that the grounds have to be in place before you can flip the switch to on to start the boiler. This means that you grind, load, tamp, fill, then wait for it to boil. Tedious. It can take 10 minutes if I start with the chilled filtered water from the fridge.
I've been making french press recently mostly because it's faster. I use an electric kettle to boil the water during the summer, because it doesn't heat the kitchen like the teapot on the stove does.
Yeah, I finally realized the obvious. Boil the water in the kettle while I'm grinding, loading and tamping, and then it goes from 'on' to sweet sweet ambrosia in just a minute or two.
Let's see... half the time... twice the caffeine! :D
