Trent Reznor/NIN have a new album. Said album has a new single, 'the hand that feeds'. You can download it for free here.

Oh, oops, sorry, my bad. That's not an MP3. Or WMA. Or even AAC.

It's the entire song, in GarageBand format. Yup, he and his crew took the raw Pro Tools tracks from the studio session, and saved them for GarageBand, so all of us can remix it to our heart's content. Each track, including vocals, ready to edit and play with.

God I love that man.

I don't know why he gets such a bad rap from people whou ought to be his fans, but anyway, I think the man's one of the most creative minds on the music scene today.

I love him too, although I am new enough to the NIN crowd that I don't know that much about him. My love has more to do with his microphone-licking while singing "I want to fuck you like an animal" at this point, but I'm sure it will mature and expand to encompass actual artistic rationales soon.

So, can GarageBand format be played on any program a less extreme geek such as myself might have?

It's exclusive to the GarageBand application for Macs. Any Mac shipped in the last 18 months or so came with a copy. Check the link for what all it can do, it's a music mixing and creation application. I suppose if you just wanted an AAC or MP3 file, a friendly Mac user could make you one. :)

(Technically, since it's actually in Apple Loops format in the tracks, Logic Pro and a number of other third party apps will read it as well, but all Macs now come with GarageBand.)

Hey! You're friendly. Could you make an mp3 and email it to me?

*laugh* Y'know, I would, but I haven't even found the time to download the file myself yet. Just posting here to pass the good word. :)
