I must be getting old.

A recent 'Best Of" poll here rated Helios Coffee as a runner-up. I'm sitting there now.

I have *no* idea why it was voted that highly... there are two waitstaff/barristas right now, and OMFG are they annoying. Slow, spaced out, and they have this bad habit of both stepping out together for a smoke break... with customers waiting. I've watched three people walk in, wait, get ticked, and leave without buying anything, while they were outside giggling.

They took *20 minutes* to get me a pound of whole bean, a double latte, and ring it up.

They've had the stereo blasting so damned loud that my ears actually ring between tracks.

Yeah, there's lots of brushed aluminum, and the leather couch is comfy, and the latte is good, but I could get Counter Culture Coffee at a dozen other places in town. I don't think I'll be coming back. Not even free WiFi makes up for this.

Then again, the same poll listed the Cup O' Joe at Mission Valley as the top coffee place in the area, so I have this sneaking suspicion that the poll was flooded by votes from the local goth/punk crowd, those are the only folks I regularly see at that place. Go figure.

Yeah, Bean Traders so rocks. Don't know where it was on the list but they get my vote for way *up there* ...and I don't mean as in where the heads of those who chose the other 2 places must have been.

I saw the same poll. I was shocked that Cup o' Joe was rated highest because it is the pits, & I was equally appalled by the Helios ranking as number 2. I tend to doubt that the Goth contingent is responsible though.
I totally agree about Helios- incredibly slow service & lack of good customer service among other annoyances. And C o' J is just bleah.
I am making a list of coffee places I like. Here are some of the ones that I know and like:
Raleigh: New World Music Cafe, Third Place
Durham: Oh La Latte, Bean Traders, Sips, Deja Vu, Ideas, and Fosters Market
Chapel Hill/Carrboro: Bean Traders, Open Eye, Caffe Driade, Southern Season, Caribou
(maybe I'll post the list in my own journal too)
