Spooktacular

Tonight [livejournal.com profile] ginkgo and I went on an after dark lantern-lit walking tour of the Sleepy Hollow Graveyard for 3 hours. Many jokes about losing one's head were made, naturally, and while it was quite chilly, and we started off in the creepy old sections, I can't say I ever got the shivers.

Until we came upon a cluster of statuary.

White.
Stone.
Angels.

*DAMN YOU RUSSELL T. DAVIES*!!

Highlights:

- The Elsa MacKenzie split boulder sarcophagus. Sliced it in half, hollowed it out, filled it, and sealed it. Want.

- William Rockefeller's mausoleum. Exactly as understated, subtle, and demure as you would expect. *cough*

- Andrew Carnegie's marker. Actually understated, subtle, and elegant. Okay, so for anyone else a 9' stone Celtic Cross in the Scottish Rites Presbyterian style might *not* be, but for him we'll call it good.

- Washington Irving, natch.

- Several captains of local industry.

- A crypt used as the filming home of a certain vamp in a certain movie. It's actually the old receiving crypt, built in 1900 to house bodies until spring thaw. Holds 42. We got to go in. :D (And see hibernating wee bats!)

- A quick run past the new community mausoleum (1100 slots, no waiting!). Guide got a guffaw when I called it a zombie hive.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] icebluenothing, you have an invite from the head of the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery Historic Fund for a private night tour if you ever come this way. ;)
