Kickaha, you're not a bad dad - animals don't signal pain in the same way we do - they experience it, but showing it doesn't lead to getting it fixed (at least, not in the wild, where their instincts are crafted) and sometimes indicates that they are weak, and in pack animals at least and in cubs of all kinds including predators, it can get them cast out or killed by peers.
