On my drive to work, there is a rather nice house, set back aways from the road, on a pleasant piece of land. At the gate to the drive, there is a simple wooden post, and on top of that post, very soon after I started here, I saw an exquisite sculpture mounted.

It struck me because it was so amazingly *erotic*. Not obscene, not vulgar, but beautifully, incredible erotic. Two figures, a male and a female, intertwined in a pose something between a dance, an embrace, and a joining. Cast in what looked like weathered bronze, it made me want to drive up and just ask where they got it, whether they had made it, what the technique was...

A month ago, it disappeared. Just the post was left, and I wondered - was it vandals? Thieves? An offended neighbor? A legal ruling? Now I wanted to stop and ask what had happened to it, and express my own small sense of loss at this beautiful piece of sculpture that I had looked forward to each day.

A week ago, it reappeared.

It is now a dripping metal form, a macabre candle-dripping with only the barest of resemblance to the previous figures. They are still intertwined, but no longer in joy, but in anguish. This was obviously on purpose. I can only wonder now, what prompted this. Loss by death? Divorce?

I won't be stopping to ask, but I know that their loss is theirs, and mine is my own.
