kickahaOn Friday night, I was baptized.
No, not in the Baptist, Evangelical, or other random faiths that one finds down here, but the One Church. The True Church.
The Church of none other than Reverend Horton Heat.
Now, you must understand, the Good Reverend's Church is a bit different. A bit odd. It moves around a lot, in fact, from night to night... on Friday night it was at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC.
[insert Rod Serling voice]
Imagine, if you will...
Three band members.
One, a cross between Gilligan's The Professor, and Lenny from Laverne & Shirley... but channeling the bright and charismatic Lucifer himself, and when he smiles... it says pure and simple "Son, you're gonna sin tonight!" That is the Reverend Horton Heat, man of the red cloth, leader of the flock.
The other front man is mainlining Jethro Clampett, Squiggy, and tapping into a bit of Meat Loaf. Meet Jimbo.
The third... well the third keeps to himself in the dark back beating the drums in insane rythyms.
Reverend plays guitar like nobody's business - I've only seen one guitarist that can match him on pure thrash surf, and that's Junior Brown on a better night. The Rev is just... gah.
Jimbo plays this massive fire engine red bass that gets more abuse than you can believe. He tosses it. He slams it. He stands on it. The Rev stands on it. And it just keeps going.
The drummer, Scott, is phenomenal, but doesn't do squat but what he done do best... drum. Like a madman.
What comes out of these three is the rawest surfrockabillythrashpunkswingmamborock you'll ever come across, my friends. Ain't nothing earthly about it, it's pure primal sound sent from the Almighty (which one, I ain't guessin') to sear your soul and open your eyes.
I have been saved, I have seen the light, and HALLELUJAH BROTHERS AND SISTERS!
