On (mostly, it was only (Ha! "only"!) in the mid-to-high 80s outside) a whim, I went down to Home Despot two weeks ago Monday and picked up a portable AC unit. Hooked it up that evening, and it was a nice-to-have the rest of the week, allowed us to keep the bedroom cool enough that we could get to sleep an hour or so earlier than we'd've been able to otherwise, and we didn't even need to run it overnight.
*Last* Monday, when the weather reports were talking about extended periods in the high 90's, some of the folks here at work went down and couldn't get any A/C. I felt very smug. Not that I need much justification for that.
We ran the thing pretty much 24 hours all last week. It was awesome--even when the temps broke 100, I was still able to get to sleep at night.
