True, and yet many OSS folks I talk to are strong left-leaning in economics, to the point that they cast the OSS movement as 'anti-capitalist'. It's not, it's *VERY* capitalist, where the capital is measured in quality and potlatch equity, instead of dollars. There's a marketplace of ideas, and ones that survive are rewarded. Apparently, though, because it's not measure in dollars, there's the misconception that it is somehow less competitive, and more cooperative. While everyone shares their code, only the fit code lasts. (In theory. ;) )

It was actually this group, the quasi-socialist/OSS crowd, that first got me thinking along these lines.
