Down in Manhattan tonight, I walked from 116th to 42nd down Broadway, from Columbia Univ to Times Square. Along the way, I did a little market research.

Up here, it's almost impossible to not trip over a Dunkin' Donuts, and they are ostensibly popular for their coffee. So is Starbuck's. I noticed a couple of each when I started, so I decided to do a little survey... which one is more prevalent?

Along those 78 blocks, by a margin of 14:5.5*, the winnah is...

Starbuck's. Yeah, I know, anyone outside of the NE is going to be going "Well duh..." but you have no idea how common DD is up here. For the first 40 blocks, it was a dead heat, but then as I got down towards Lincoln Center and the posher areas, Starby's pulled ahead by a *large* margin.

The people's addiction has spoken.

*There was a huge DD 1/2 block off of B'way at 66th, so I counted it as half. :)

As a NE-erner, I actually would have put the money on DD. Hmph.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised when it was 5:5, then 8:5, then 14:5...

I wonder how the numbers do as you go further north. Growing up, there was what could be considered a criminal number of DDs in my hometown. It could be noted that I have not been residing in the NE for over 6 years now, so things may have changed significantly. :)

In our sleepy little town, there are two DDs--one a half mile away and one just around a mile. Their concentration baffles me.

I can't find the study I'm looking for which discussed the saturation of Boston with DDs, but this will have to stand in. http://bostonist.com/2007/04/26/boston_runs_on_dunkin.php The article I'm looking for came out about a year ago. Poop.

*laugh* Yeah, I know. I just love walking in Manhattan at night, and I decided to give myself something to do while I enjoyed the stroll. :)
