On the way back, there was an innocuous little sign at a fork in the trail. "Mt. Storm King 1.7", it said. A mile seven? No problem. Plenty of time.
Umm, yeah. Except for the 1800 feet of vertical gain over that mile seven. Sweet views of Crescent Lake, though, and a lovely sunset to watch from the end of the trail. I got this shot of the "don't go past here if you want to live" sign: http://lonelymountain.net/photo/landscape/washington/olympics/storm_king.html
You can see the line where I used the grad-ND filter to bring the contrast range down to something the camera could handle.
And then I raced the night down the hill. And lost; did the last half of the descent in the dark. With the full camera backpack. And the tripod. And the November cold. And the muddy trail (Olympics, remember?). Note to self: when fully loaded, do *not* run down steep and muddy trails in the dark--when I got back to PA for dinner, I thought I was going to have to crawl up the hill to my motel because my knees were so bad.
Got to go back sometime when I have the time to spend. :)
