When the iPhone was released, a lot was made about it running OS X. (Not MacOS X, that's the Mac version of OS X. OS X is the core underlying OS. Take that, add in touchscreen drivers, etc, etc, minimize the UI with a new framework, and voila: iPhone's OS.)

The new iPod Touch is, by all visible measures, the iPhone minus the cell capabilities. Heck, it even has the Safari browser. Yet... nowhere can I find anything about the OS. Odd. Given that it's an iPod, and they've never said anything about the iPod's OS before, it's not horribly surprising, but I'm intrigued.

Furthermore, the new iPod Classic and iPod Nano have new UIs that appear to use bits and pieces of CoreAnimation and CoreGraphics, and share much of the UI with the iPhone and iPod Touch.

So... is Apple now running OS X [iPod] on the full line, except for the iPod Shuffle? Or are these still custom jobs? Or is the iPod Touch the only OS X iPod? Or does it actually have very little to do with the iPhone?

Hmm.

Edit: Some sites are reporting that the iPod Touch is also running OS X, just like the iPhone. Okay, the expected is out of the way... now on to the rest of the line...

5.8, one take.

Several 5.7s, clean.

One strained tendon in right hand. Poo.

I'm getting there... :)
