Bad Scott Baio movie*
Sep. 3rd, 2006 01:07 pmYesterday the remains of Ernesto moved through, and while it was *wonderful* weather from my and
ginkgo's perspectives, (mmm, wind and rain), predictably, the locals freaked out.**
We got a nice light show, however, since at 1am the transformer a half a block down started to shoot sparks and flames. We'd had brownouts (pretty bad ones actually - thank god for the batter backup unit for the server and network) since about 10pm, but only a couple of power blips. I heard a speaker outside, as you find on utility vehicles, and then a big *FFFZZZT* *FFFFZT* *POP* *FZZZZZTT*.
ginkgo had gone downstairs to move her car, and was treated to a much better view than I had through the rain-streaked window, but it was amazing even from up here. I ran around the house shutting down electronics and unplugging them, by which time she was back up saying I really needed to come down and watch. Alas, by the time we got back down there, the show was over, and it was just firetrucks in the rain. The ConEd truck showed up a while later - apparently there was enough of an issue happening before we knew about it to have someone alert emergency services. *Somehow* we never lost power for real.
Today is sunny, light wind, and high of 76. Nice. :)
*Yes, I realize that is a huge pool to select from, but I mean this one.
**I swear to god, NYers are just the biggest bunch of whining pussies I've ever been around. And that's a term I just don't use. A little snow, they all freak out. A little wind, omg, the world is ending. The news was flooded (rimshot) with reports on how this 'hurricane' was causing dangerous conditions for weekend revelers. Last I checked, 30mph winds are not a hurricane, but just a nice stiff breeze. If they think this is a hurricane, they really, really need to stop being so provincial*** and look around a bit.
Also, maybe if they sucked it up and took care of themselves a little more, they wouldn't feel the need to expect someone else to save their sorry asses at every turn. It's pretty obvious why this is a bastion of far-left politics up here - they're helpless unless someone else takes care of them and caters to their needs. If this is area is the spiritual heart of the Democratic Party, then I am scared for its future. And the sense of *entitlement* you get from that? Jesus. Most self-centered people I've ever been around. Nobody will ever understand *their* problems, but dear god they're going to make sure everyone hears about them in nauseating detail. It's like being surrounded by 7 million LJers, and you can't close the browser window.
***Metropolitan? NY, especially NYC, is perhaps the most provincial place I've ever been. If it isn't inside the border of NYC, it doesn't exist. The claim that "you can get anything in NYC!" only applies if you pre-define 'anything' to mean 'things you can get in NYC', since, y'know, nothing else matters.
