What was that about 'nature finds a way'?
Oct. 15th, 2004 03:56 amI'm of the firm belief that one's sexual orientation is greatly defined at birth, through genetics and fetal influences, and only then honed or sadly, sometimes diverted, through cultural forces.
What fetal influences you ask? Well, there are two main bursts of hormones injected by the mother into the fetus during its development that help set the gender development... one apparently tied to physical formation, and the other occurs during the cerebral development burst. (If I have this wrong, please correct - this is what I've turned up as the most recent information available.) If these bursts are out of sync, or opposing, then the body and brain get tugged two different directions, resulting in orientation not matching 'normal' breeding practices.
There's always been this nagging feeling that genetics played a large part, but no one's been able to find that squirrely 'gay gene'.
Well: http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/science/10/13/homosexuality.study.reut/index.html
It finds a link between certain genetic markers and homosexual orientation in men.
But two things stand out: 1) it's only passed down through the mother, and 2) it's also linked to increased fertility in women.
So a trait that increases fertility also seems to increase the rate of homosexual male births... thereby imposing a population control system. Naturally. Which means that it *is* passed along, and not subject to Darwinian weed-out, because it is passed along the female lines, and also results in wider gene dispersal.

Fsckers.
