kickahaI have an original, first-gen iPod, purchased Xmas 2001. 5GB, black/white screen, no photos, no videos, no *nuthin*, just music. FireWire only, no Dock connector. It still works.
About a year ago, the battery time was down to about an hour though, so I decided last week to order a replacement battery. $15, 50% more run time than the original, and the necessary tools (a plastic wedge) included. Woot!
Before replacing the old one, I decided to drain it. I had, of course, just charged it like a numbskull.
It's been going for 4 hrs, and has dropped 25% according to the meter.
Um... whiskey tango foxtrot??
Sure, I'm running it at about 15-20% volume instead of 45-50% because of the new canalphones, but what the hell?
It's been bouncing around in my bag for a year, unused, and there's some evidence that nano-crystal formation in Li ion batteries is the main contributor to them dying (a common technique, ie, urban legend, for resurrecting a Li ion battery is to freeze it, then whack it firmly to shatter said crystals), so I'm wondering if the combo of disuse and bouncing broke up the buggers. I dunno, but apparently I just wasted $15.
Yes, the irony of this in the face of all the furor over iPod batteries amuses me to no end.
