Well that was unexpected...

[livejournal.com profile] ginkgo and I went to Brooklyn today (Greenpoint district) to just go have some fun and get out of the house. On the way down we stopped off at Union Sq to check out the open air market and, now, Xmas crafts fair. Neat things, didn't pick up anything, probably should have grabbed a couple things I saw. Ah well.

Off to Brooklyn with us, where we walked the length of Manhattan Ave from Bedford to the waterfront west, hoping for a good view of Manhattan, but no... just industrial scary areas met us. Poo. Although... I had one of the best lattes of my *life* at the Ashbox coffee house, between Ash and Box streets (clever, huh?) If I were anywhere in the area, that would be a regular hangout. Had an incredibly good and cheap (!!!) lunch at King's Feast. Well, it was in Polish, so it was K*mumble* Jadlo, but we had insane amounts of excellent food for under $20, for both of us. In the City. Lovin' it. We were 2 of maybe 6 people in the entire place (seated about 45, and it was packed) that didn't speak Polish as our primary language. That's always a good sign, and it proved true - the food was excellent.

To round it out, we decided to pop our heads in a thrift store on the way back... and what did I find but comics. About 15-20 long boxes of comics, non of them sorted, all sorts of crap, stacked on top of one another, behind each other, bagged, unbagged, boarded, without covers, you name it. "$1 ea, 25 for $15"

Yeeeeeeeeeeah. We started going through boxes.

I came home with 111 issues, $71, but the shopkeep said make it $70. Oops. A lot of sheer crap that probably isn't worth more than $0.25 per but fills some holes in my collection, but a couple of OMG pieces...

Trident Press, Trident #1, VF - anthology, includes 1st 1/4 of Grant Morrison's St. Swithin's Day, original B/W
Martha Washington Goes to War #1, VF (maybe mint - this thing is *pristine*)
Dave McKean _Cages_ #3, probably F, has some mild warping on the spine towards the bottom
An original Tick Fan Club membership card, *in the unused envelope*... unsigned. No name filled in. Ooooh, I'm so tempted...

Anyway, I there were some other gems we found, but those were the fun ones. I bought some I'm pretty sure I have already, but since I didn't have a pick list (I need to make that one of these days...), that's okay.

Hauling them back a couple miles to the subway stop, through the subway system, and then home on the train was fun though. Really.

Damn, sounds like a fun day in the city. I love the thrift shops there. Y'all might want to check out the Salvation Army one in hells kitchen. Huge and used to be filled with amazing stuff. extra bonus--right up the street from the H&H bagel factory--quite possibly the best bagels in NYC. Yumyum.
